Activities/What we do
The Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD) runs annual calls for project proposals from around the world, supporting initiatives that use astronomy to address aspects of sustainable development. Proposals typically progress through stages, beginning with an initial idea and, if selected, moving to a more detailed application with feedback. Supported projects span a wide range of themes, including astrotourism that leverages dark skies for local economic growth, the use of astronomy to support mental health and resilience, STEM engagement for under-served or marginalised communities, education initiatives, and art-astronomy collaborations.

To sharpen its focus, the OAD has highlighted three flagship thematic areas: astrotourism for socioeconomic development, astronomy for mental health, and the application of astronomy knowledge and skills for sustainable development. These will be discussed later in the course.
