Welcome
Welcome to this online course on migrant participation and inclusion in decision-making.
Taking part in activities such as volunteering, voting, or working in the public sector can empower migrants to have a voice, to represent groups, and to shape decisions on the issues that affect them. Participation strengthens migrants’ resilience.
This course aims to raise awareness and knowledge of participation as an important area of migrant integration support, but one that generally receives less attention. It was designed for organisations and individuals who work with and support migrant communities in the UK, including migrant-led community groups and integration practitioners, many of whom may be migrants themselves.
You will learn about different ways to participate in civic, political and public life and how migrant clients can be supported to engage with participation opportunities in the UK.
This is an interactive course which you can do by yourself or as a group. It includes activities to help you reflect on your experience and apply new learning in practice. Should you be interested to take this to the next level, the course signposts to further opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills in this area.
In order to pass the course, you will need to take the end-of-course quiz, which will assess your learning, and answer at least 80 percent of the questions correctly. Once you have read the course content, worked through the activities and passed the quiz, you will be sent a statement of participation via email.
Please note that if you enrol on the course, your name and email address will be visible to the course manager who can download reports about user activity. This information will not be shared with anyone unless all identifying data has been removed.
We hope the course inspires and builds your confidence to support migrant participation.
This course provides general information on migrants' rights and opportunities to participate in civic, political, and public life. It is not intended as legal advice, and individual circumstances may differ significantly. Learners are encouraged to exercise discretion and consider the specific legal, social, and political contexts in which they work, particularly when supporting migrants with undocumented status. The guidance offered should always be adapted with sensitivity to current conditions and the safety and wellbeing of migrants.
