Supporting migrants to get involved in public consultations

There are many practical ways you can support migrant clients to engage with public consultations and share their views on local or national issues.

1. Raise awareness among clients

  • Share information about current consultations via newsletters, WhatsApp groups, or posters in waiting rooms and drop-in centres.
  • Explain what a consultation is and why it matters in simple terms.
  • Use case examples to show how community feedback has made a difference in the past.

2. Help clients understand the topic

  • Break down consultation topics using plain English or translated summaries.
  • Use group sessions or one-to-one conversations to explain what the proposed changes mean and how they might affect migrants.

3. Support clients to take part

  • Assist with online access by providing devices or Wi-Fi in community hubs.
  • Provide language support through interpretation or simplified guidance.
  • Help clients draft written responses or complete online forms.
  • Organise group responses to build confidence—e.g. “community voice” submissions based on shared concerns

4. Build confidence in public engagement

  • Reassure clients that consultations are open to all, including those with different visa statuses.
  • Clarify that taking part will not affect immigration status or benefits.
  • Encourage clients to feel that their voice matters and can lead to change.

Top tips for migrant support providers:

  • Monitor local authority websites or the GOV.UK consultation page regularly
  • Create a “consultation corner” with live updates on opportunities
  • Partner with local organisations running consultations to get early info or invite them to host info sessions
  • Follow up and share outcomes of past consultations to show impact
