Introduction to building leadership capacity

Some migrants may already feel confident in their understanding of the UK’s political system and know how to speak up or get involved. They may have prior experience of volunteering or working in public services—either in the UK or in their country of origin.

Taking on a leadership role in the community, politics or public sector can sometimes seem out of reach and many migrants may be unaware of the support available to help them develop their skills and confidence.

Access to training programmes, mentoring schemes and leadership courses can support migrants' personal and professional growth, and prepare them for roles of influence and responsibility.

Raising awareness of these opportunities is key to ensuring that migrants feel empowered to pursue leadership and make meaningful contributions across policy areas. Some examples of leadership pathways include:

  • Standing as an elected representative
  • Setting up a community group or migrant association
  • Working in a public sector leadership role
