Introduction to supporting deeper engagement

Some of your clients may already have a good understanding of the UK’s civic and political systems. They know how to vote, take part in public consultations, or find volunteering opportunities. They may even be aware of who their local councillors or Members of Parliament (MPs) are.

However, knowing about the system isn’t the same as feeling confident or empowered to actively participate. Many migrants—even those who are well-informed—may still feel unsure about how to get involved in shaping decisions. For example, they might not realise that it’s entirely acceptable, and often encouraged, to contact their local councillor or MP about issues they care about. Because this step can seem formal, intimidating, or unfamiliar, many simply never try.

Similarly, deeper forms of engagement—like joining a political party, becoming a member of a campaign group, or improving public services through roles in the public sector—can seem out of reach. Some migrants may not feel qualified or welcome in these spaces, or they may be unaware of the opportunities that exist to participate.

Supporting clients to engage more actively may involve assistance with:

  • Identifying and writing to their elected representatives
  • Joining a political party, trade union or advocacy group
  • Exploring career opportunities in the public sector
