Supporting migrants to access public sector roles

Migrant support organisations can help break down barriers to migrant employment in the public sector, build clients’ confidence, and ensure they feel empowered to take part in the workforce that serves and reflects their communities.

1. Raising awareness: Many migrants may have worked in the public sector in their country of origin. Encourage clients to explore similar opportunities in the UK.

2. Identifying jobs: Offer support in job searching or signpost clients to public sector job search platforms, such as  NHS Jobs website and Local Government Jobs website.

3. Checking eligibility: Help clients check their eligibility to work and understand sector-specific requirements (e.g. DBS checks for health, education, or youth roles).

4. Addressing barriers: Help clients overcome common barriers.

  • Qualifications: Where roles require UK-accredited qualifications, refer clients to training or conversion support (e.g. NARIC for foreign degrees)
  • Language: Support English language development where needed
  • Confidence & system knowledge: Run information sessions, mock interviews, and job clubs
  • System knowledge: Offer help in understanding job descriptions and navigating the job application and recruitment process

5. Building capacity: Offer more intensive support to prepare clients for roles, such as hosting workshops on public sector careers, job search clinics or drop-ins to review applications, partnering with local councils or NHS trusts for internship schemes, building connections with employers who support migrant recruitment, providing translated guides to help clients navigate job sites.
