Introduction

It can be difficult for anyone to fully understand how decisions are made around them, who has power in society, and how our representatives are elected in the UK’s democracy.

This can be particularly challenging for migrants who face additional barriers, such as language access, moving from a completely different political context, and a lack of support to get involved. Migrants in the UK will often hear anti-migrant narratives, which can exclude them further from participation in civic, political and public life.

In cities like Birmingham and London, migrant support organisations play a vital role in helping migrants settle, amplifying their voices, and advocating for migrants' rights. However, for many ordinary migrant residents, opportunities to take part in decision-making can often be inaccessible.

A truly inclusive democracy values and welcomes everyone’s voice and contribution.
