Activity 6
Mapping volunteering opportunities
Goal: Identify and document inclusive volunteering opportunities to better guide migrant clients into suitable roles.
Time required: 30 minutes
Step 1: Know your client group (10 minutes)
Thinking about your clients, what are their common interests or skills? Are there any language or mobility barriers to consider? What types of volunteering might be most accessible (e.g. short-term, flexible, local)? Write down 2–3 client profiles you typically support.
Step 2: Research local volunteering options (20 minutes)
Use the internet, local networks, or community boards to identify at least 5 volunteering opportunities near you. Try to include a variety (e.g. community centres, libraries, food banks, migrant support groups, cultural events).
Step 3: Assess accessibility and inclusion (10 minutes)
For each opportunity, consider: (i) Is the organisation migrant-friendly; (ii) Do they offer induction / training?; (iii) Are interpreters or language support available?; (iv) Do they reimburse travel expenses? Highlight 2–3 opportunities that would be most welcoming to your clients.
Step 4: Create a volunteer referral sheet (Optional)
Compile the top opportunities into a simple flyer or referral sheet for clients, including role description, how to apply and what to expect. The example template below can help you get started.

Final reflection: Has anything surprised you during this exercise? What more could your organisation do to connect clients with volunteering opportunities?
