Supporting migrants to stand for election
Migrant support organisations can raise awareness of voting and candidacy rights and guide migrant clients who are interested in political leadership to find relevant resources and support.
- Offer information resources such as the Introduction to Standing as a Candidate guide on the Electoral Commission website which provides basic information on the process and the rules.
- Host information sessions on elections and political participation.
- Connect clients with local councillors or party groups.
- Partner with or signpost to specialist organisations that provide bespoke support for under-represented groups in politics. Take a look at Migrant Democracy Project website (for their MPower political leadership programme), Operation Black Vote website (for their civic leadership and mentoring support), Elect Her website (support for women standing for office), and Local Government Association website (Be a Councillor programme for people from diverse backgrounds).
- Build confidence and skills by offering mentoring, public speaking workshops or support with developing campaigning skills (e.g. leafletting and door-knocking).
