The second potential application for bivalve shells that were studied within the GAIN project was their use in biofilters for recirculating aquaculture systems (which usually produce fish or shrimp). The video in this section introduces the theory of biofilter operation and the potential benefits of using bivalve shells as a substrate for bacteria.
