How to register?

Who can register to vote?

You can register if:

  • You are eligible to vote (based on your nationality and immigration status)
  • You are aged 16 or over, in Scotland or Wales (18+ to vote in general elections)
  • You are living in the UK

How to register?

To vote, you must register online at this government website

You will need:

  • Your name, address, date of birth
  • Your National Insurance number (if you have one)

When to register?

You must register at least 12 working days before an election to be able to vote.

Why register?

Registering lets you have a say in how things are run—like schools, healthcare, transport, and immigration policy.

Already registered?

If you are already registered at your current address, you don’t need to register again—just wait for your poll card. But in subsequent years you may be contacted to confirm you are still living in the same address and wish to continue being registered.

What happens next

  • Your local council may contact you if they need more information.
  • You will be added to the electoral register and sent a poll card before the election. This tells you where to vote (which polling station) and when (usually from 7am to 10pm)
