Why and when to write to elected representatives

Why contact your elected representative

You can contact them if you:

  • Need help with a personal issue involving government services (e.g. immigration, benefits, housing)
  • Want to raise a concern about a local or national issue
  • Want to influence a policy or decision
  • Need support with a community project or campaign
  • Want to attend a surgery (a drop-in session where they meet constituents)

When to contact your elected representative

You may want to contact them for several reasons:

  • When you can’t get help through other channels (e.g. a local council office or government helpline)
  • If a law or decision affects you or your community
  • During public consultations, local developments, or when laws are being debated
  • Any time you want to express your opinion or ask for support — they are there to listen
  • You must contact the elected representative for the area where you live (whether councillor or MP) even if you do not support them politically.
