Working in the public sector

The public sector in the UK includes a wide range of roles and jobs that support essential services and serve the public. Unlike private sector made up of businesses and companies with different purpose, public sector jobs are funded by the government and provide services for the community, such as schools, hospitals, and the police.

Many roles in the public sector are open to people from diverse backgrounds and employers usually support equality, diversity, and inclusion. Some organisations offer entry-level roles and there are often training and career development opportunities to progress in your career.

The UK's ethnic minorities and migrants are generally under-represented in public sector workforce though many would like to see themselves more represented within their local authority and other public services. Poor monitoring of workforce by nationality limits our understanding of migrant representation in the sector.

When public sector employees reflect the communities they serve, this can improve access to, and trust in, public services.
