Roles especially accessible to migrants
There are many public sector roles which: (1) do not require UK qualifications or accept international qualifications; (2) offer on-the-job training or apprenticeships; (3) value language skills, lived experience, or cultural understanding; and (4) are in shortage and welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds.
Examples include:
- Healthcare (NHS & Social care) roles, such as healthcare assistant, care worker or nursing associate.
- Education support roles, for example, teaching assistant, school lunchtime supervisor or bilingual support worker.
- Local government roles, including community support worker, customers service advisor or waste and recycling worker.
- Roles within libraries, museums and community projects, like library assistant, or community engagement officer.
- Special entry routes for migrants, for instance, local council-supported internships for refugees or asylum seekers or NHS “Steps into Work” or Refugee Support Programmes.
Always check: (1) If the role is open to your visa type or work rights; (2) If you need a criminal record check (DBS) – common in care, health, and education; (3) If language support or training is available as part of the job.
