Other ways to engage in the local area
There are many other ways you can engage with others in your neighbourhood to build connections, find people with shared interests and contribute to strengthening the local community and positive representation of migrants.
- Attend community events such as local food festivals, music events or markets.
- Visit community centres, libraries, or town halls to find what is happening in your area.
- Join local groups or clubs, for instance, sports clubs, walking groups, book clubs, art or music classes, gardening groups, or cooking groups.
- Take part in cultural or faith-based activities, such as multicultural events or local religious group activities.
- Learn or improve your English by joining free English language classes at community colleges or charities and practice conversation in informal meetups or language cafés.
- Get to know your neighbours, introduce yourself, join a tenants’ or residents’ association or help with local clean-up days.
- Connect through social media, join local Facebook or WhatsApp groups, or platforms like Nextdoor to stay informed and connected with your neighbour.
- Engage through children’s schools, for instance, attend school events and parents’ groups, volunteer at school functions or join the Parent-Teacher Association.
- Participate in local decision-making by going to local council meetings or consultations, sharing your views on local issues, and taking part in elections if eligible.
- Offer your skills in the community, for example, by running a crafts workshop or a cooking class, or other skills to share your culture.
