Steps to take toward public sector leadership
1. Start with a public sector role
Entry into leadership usually begins by gaining experience in a public-facing role. This can be as a teacher, social worker, nurse, community engagement officer, or civil servant.
2. Upgrade your qualifications if needed
Convert or validate foreign qualifications through UK ENIC (the UK’s qualifications recognition body) and complete necessary UK-specific training (e.g. QTS for teaching, NHS registration, or safeguarding).
3. Develop leadership skills
Join mentorship programmes and leadership training to develop your skills. Take on roles like team leader, union representative or committee chair to gain further experience.
4. Network and join professional associations
Build connections with sector bodies such as NHS Leadership Academy, CIPFA or ASCL. Volunteer for advisory boards or steering groups to develop your network.
5. Apply for leadership opportunities
Look on public sector job platforms like Civil Service Jobs, NHS Jobs, Local Government Jobs, Guardian Jobs for leadership opportunities. Highlight your lived experience and community engagement in your application.
