The primary sources of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are exclusively derived from photosynthetic organisms, with alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) — a precursor to highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs) — found mainly in terrestrial plants, while eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are predominantly sourced from the marine environment. Photosynthetic microalgae serve as the foundational producers of these essential fatty acids, which are then transferred up the food chain, particularly through fish like the Peruvian anchovy (Engraulis ringens), currently supplying around 80% of the world’s omega-3 HUFAs. However, due to concerns like overfishing and climate change, catch quotas have been implemented to protect fish populations, prompting the exploration of alternative sources such as marine algae, krill, and fungi — notably the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica — for sustainable and scalable production.

Looking ahead, the future of omega-3 and omega-6 sourcing may increasingly rely on innovative and sustainable alternatives to traditional fisheries. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs), including soybeans, canola, and oil-seed rape, are being developed to enhance the production of these essential fatty acids on land. Additionally, efforts are underway to maximize the use of fisheries by-catch, seafood processing waste, and omega-rich waste streams to recover EPA and DHA efficiently. These approaches aim to reduce pressure on marine ecosystems while ensuring a stable supply of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for global health needs.
