Contaminant levels can vary significantly, and because marine organisms readily absorb environmental pollutants, dried algae products often exhibit higher concentrations of these substances. Typical contaminants also include 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, acrylamide, and spores, which can pose health risks if not properly managed. The high variability in contamination levels underscores the need for stringent quality control measures to ensure that algae-derived foods are safe, nutritious, and free from harmful substances.
