This lesson provided a comprehensive exploration of sustainable aquaculture and food safety, emphasizing the One Health approach — a holistic framework that connects human, animal, and environmental health.
We began by examining food safety challenges in seafood and aquaculture, including chemical, biological, and physical contaminants (e.g., heavy metals, pathogens, microplastics), as well as ecotoxicity and the environmental impact of wastewater, which spreads pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
The lesson highlighted how unsustainable practices, such as excessive antibiotic use, poor waste management, and intensive farming, degrade ecosystems and threaten public health.
A significant focus was on alternatives to conventional practices, such as strategic holistic approaches like circular farming, ecosystem-based management, and integrated multitrophic aquaculture (IMTA).
We discussed biosecurity measures — both external (bioexclusion) and internal (biocontainment) — to prevent pathogen spread, including sanitation, controlled movement, quarantine protocols, and pest control. The lesson also emphasized boosting natural immunity through animal welfare (Five Freedoms), balanced nutrition, genetic selection for disease resistance, and alternative treatments (e.g., probiotics, phytotherapy). These strategies collectively reduce antimicrobial dependence while improving productivity and sustainability.
Finally, we addressed waste management as a critical component of sustainable production, introducing the waste hierarchy (prevent, reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, dispose) to minimize environmental impact.
The persistent threat of antimicrobial residues in ecosystems was underscored, along with the need for responsible waste treatment to mitigate AMR and pollution.
The lesson concluded by reinforcing the importance of integrated, preventive approaches — aligning with One Health principles — to create resilient, ethical, and sustainable food systems that protect both public health and the planet.
