Traceability in Fisheries – Case Study "e-Fish®"
The e-Fish® system stands as a pioneering traceability solution in Italy’s fisheries supply chain, ensuring the transparent and reliable tracking of seafood products from fish markets to the end consumer. Designed to foster seamless collaboration among all stakeholders, including fishers, aquaculture producers, distributors, traders, and consumers, this system transforms traditional labeling by incorporating cutting-edge technologies like QR codes, RFID, and blockchain. By doing so, e-Fish® not only enhances traceability but also promotes greater accountability and efficiency across the entire supply chain, setting a benchmark for digital innovation in the fisheries sector.

Over the past two decades, the e-Fish® project has delivered remarkable results, successfully tracking 5 million boxes, equivalent to 25,000 tons of fish, across 70,000 auctions. The system’s integration of digital tools, such as mobile applications for operators and consumers, has enabled full traceability while supporting sustainable fishing practices and aligning with the EU’s Farm to Fork strategy. Additionally, e-Fish® has strengthened origin-based branding and transparency, empowering consumers with verifiable information about the seafood they purchase and reinforcing trust in the supply chain.
