The role of the teacher/trainer

Management of the learning space is one of the core responsibilities of the teacher/trainer. It is an important function and concerns the co-ordination and co-operation necessary for learning. A teacher/trainer has the authority to direct and facilitate what goes on during the sessions. However, the teacher’s/trainer's authority does not mean being autocratic, domineering or an overt use of power.  Instead, a positive teacher’s/ trainer's authority is a quality that facilitates a smooth operating classroom and is at the heart of successful group management.

The role of the teacher/trainer in management of learning spaces include:

  • setting the tone and culture for learning
  • building a warm and friendly learning environment
  • mentoring and nurturing the learners’ behaviour
  • being a role model
