What are the Visions?

The tool's central anchor is the Visions. As conceptually explained in the Use Case section, the Visions are centred around the four IPBES Life Frames (living in nature, living from nature, living with nature, and living as nature), which have been found to have broad relevance across the world. The Visions were developed by working in-depth with local residents across multiple cities. The Visions were created as archetypal stories that convey the Life Frames in everyday language, with a focus on trees, in British contexts.

The four Visions are intended as intuitive prompts supporting participants to imagine potential British treescapes, with some elements that are intentionally provocative. Each one can be considered separately as a theme or emphasis, but when contrasted against each other they might highlight or prompt different aspects of social or cultural value. However, they are not mutually exclusive; for example, a tree can provide edible fruit (living from), nurturing the same tree can help child to be connected to nature (living as), provide a pleasant place to socialise or recreate (living in), and provide a home for wildlife (living with).

The next section introduces the four Visions. Each page contains an audio file of the vision being read out, an illustration, and the text of the vision. The illustration does not contain every item mentioned in the text, as its role is to visualise some key features. There is no alt-text for the illustrations because they are derived from the visions, and no transcript file because the full text is displayed on the page.

The practical aspects of using the Visions in a participatory panel will be discussed in the 'Running your own workshop' section. Let's start by becoming more familiar with their contents.
