Visioning treescapes

A composite of the illustrations for the four visions. Being honest, it's included as a decorative call-back

Next, the pre-panel survey introduces the Visions for the first time. The task moves from participants considering values embedded in their own real-life context, to a consideration of the four life frames, as expressed in archetype, in the Visions.

Practically, the main aim at the survey stage is to prompt reflective thought and familiarise participants with the visions. A summary of the results will be presented to the panel, potentially including anonymised quotes. These excerpts inform participants of the range of views elicited.

By starting anonymously and including dislikes, the presentation encourages participants to recognise and vocalise all positions, rather than only normative ones. In other words, it encourages participants to be candid, rather than to recount what they believe to be the 'appropriate' view for a public forum. Supporting participants to have a conversation, rather than an exchange or pre-formed views is another key part of generating answers that are rigorous, meaningful, and empowering.

In practice, the survey presents each Vision in turn (in, from, as, with), and after each one asks two, simple questions:

  • Is there anything you like about this vision?
  • Is there anything you dislike about this vision?

The text is identical to that seen in the previous section of the course that introduced you to the Visions. To see it in context, see the 'Pre-workshop questionnaire' file in the 'Resources' section.
