2.2.5 GESI Responsive Pedagogy

Pedagogy is described as the method and practice of teaching. Good pedagogy must be responsive and transformative.
How can a pedagogy be responsive and transformative to GESI?
GESI-responsive pedagogy should be learner-centred, and responsive to different learning needs of students of all genders, ages, and disabilities.
GESI-responsive pedagogy should also provide an alternative approach that encourages students to think critically about a specific topic, appreciate multiple perspectives, and ultimately remove bias. This approach also allows for mutual learning between students and teachers, rather than one-way learning.
On the other hand, transformative pedagogy combines the elements of constructivist and critical pedagogy that empowers students to critically examine their beliefs, values, and knowledge with the goal of developing a reflective knowledge base, an appreciation for multiple perspectives, and a sense of critical consciousness and agency.
The success of both responsive and transformative pedagogy is dependent on a number of factors. Some of the key factors include:
- Smaller classrooms leading to easier personalisation;
- Reasonable accommodation and accessibility as a cross-cutting factor, and;
- Inclusive and accessible training curriculum and materials.
