3.2.8.1 Making Safeguarding Personal: Board & Senior Leadership Responsibilities
The Board and Senior leadership have a critical role in safeguarding by setting the tone of safeguarding risk management and enabling culture. Some of their roles include:
- Ensuring that they appoint among themselves a safeguarding board member / Trustee;
- Consider safeguarding as a standard agenda during board meetings;
- Setting the strategic direction for safeguarding, and ensuring that there are adequate resources to support its implementation;
- Approve safeguarding and related policies and hold management accountable for their implementation;
- Provide oversight over management through receiving and reviewing regular progress reports on the implementation of safeguarding;
- Provide safeguarding risk management and compliance oversight;
- Making sure senior leadership understand and models good practice, and;
- Ensure that safeguarding focal points/champions are appointed at all levels of the organization.
