3.1.7. Scenario Analysis 1

View

Consider the following scenario and attempt the tasks outlined,

Miriam (not her real name) has been working with your institution for 9 months in the academics department. She works closely with the students’ affairs office, as well as the Registrar to collect data. Miriam is married and has two young children at home, and she often worries about balancing her work and life responsibilities. Her oldest child is just starting school, and she has had to take some time off work recently to help him to settle in.

When Miriam first started working at the institution, her supervisor, Mr Adero (not his real name), was very friendly and supportive. He was aware of her responsibilities at home and regularly checked on her well-being. Over the past few months, however, Mr Adero has seemed quite stressed and has indicated that he feels overwhelmed by the amount of work he must do. He has been irritable with Miriam and has shouted at her publicly on a few occasions. He has questioned if she is putting in enough time to do her job effectively and that perhaps she should "consider her priorities".

This situation, along with some challenges at home, has been causing Miriam stress. Several of her female colleagues have been reporting to her that there are challenges with their teams that they are not comfortable with. They shared with her that male colleagues aren’t giving them space to speak, dominate the work, and they feel that they are not part of the team. As this was shared confidentially, Miriam isn’t sure what to do.

In addition to these situations, one of the senior members of staff approached her last week and asked Miriam about her family and if she was happy at home. He had noticed that she appeared stressed, and asked if she wanted to meet for tea after work to talk about how she is feeling. At the end of the conversation, he touched her arm which made her feel very uncomfortable. She is worried that others in the group may have noticed and might think that she is involved with him.
