1.4.8 Establishing Partnerships
![]()
Partnerships may take many different forms depending on the organisation and situation. Stakeholder mapping will help identify which partners are interested in entering into a partnership agreement. However, to understand the type of partnership agreement, the following should be considered:
-
What are the key objectives, successes and values of the partnering institutions?
-
What expertise and credibility do the partners have in their specific areas?
-
What are the risks to the partnership?
It is also important to consider the different types of partnerships that may be beneficial depending on the partner and their situation. For example:
-
Individual Partnerships (1:1) - when stakeholders/organisations formally agree to work together toward a specific goal;
-
Alliances - less formal partnerships that advance an advocacy objective. These can be for shorter periods of time for higher risk stakeholders, or advantageous between stakeholders who have different political objectives and cannot officially align publicly, and;
- Coalitions - bring together a wider group of stakeholders toward a shared goal. These require more resources to facilitate leadership and coordinate stakeholders.
