When conducting a GESI assessment, one can opt for self-assessment or to use external experts. Either option has its pros and cons.

 Self-assessments Pros:

  • Often less expensive
  • Evaluator may understand more about the nuances of the organisation
  • Organisations can build on routinely collected data

Self-assessments Cons:

  • A high likelihood of introducing bias from being a current employee, due to personal relationships, etc
  • The organisations may not have the GESI expertise needed to conduct an assessment

External Assessments Pros:

  • More likely to be objective
  • Benefitting from external GESI expertise
 External Assessments Cons:

  • May not be able to capture the full nuances of the organisation/workplace due to time, resources, etc
  • Lack of integration of evaluator
