In 2021, Leonard  Cheshire and the Skills For Prosperity project’s contractor “Move on Afrika Ltd” conducted a GESI assessment on 12 TVET institutions.  A summary of the findings is provided below:

  • All 12 institutions had a clear understanding of gender;
  • Principals/deputy principals had higher levels of understanding vis-a-vis teachers and learners;
  • All institutions had varying competencies related to the broader concept of social inclusion;
  • Strong leadership buy-in existed throughout;
  • 80% of institutions had gender departments/committees;
  • None of the institutions had a GESI policy or strategy; most referred to the National Gender and Disability mainstreaming policy, and;
  • Most institutions had different initiatives in place to address social exclusion such as initiatives to educate parents, marriage counselling, gender ambassadors etc.
