3.3.4. Safe Design

Church
World Service, partnered with the
Ministry of Education to produce a comprehensive guideline for safety standards
in schools that is a useful reference guide while implementing safe design in
schools.
Some key areas to focus on in the safe design in schools are:
- Physical facilities: Ease of access by all while allowing for learners' privacy; having a welcoming environment, without looking like a ‘prison’; sufficient spaces for ventilation, and; ease of escaping emergencies through marked exits.
- Creating an environment of trust and respect so that women, persons with disabilities, and low-income youth feel comfortable communicating.
- Building inclusivity of women, persons with disabilities, and low-income youth into the corporate culture of the institution or workplace.
- Creating assistive devices for the well-being of persons with disabilities in the workplace and institutions
- implementation of policies, practices, and programmes of reasonable accommodation for persons with disabilities
It is also important to note that 60% of the Kenyan population are young people aged 10-24 and are likely to face mental health challenges associated with human rights violations. Schools need to design safe spaces where learners can deal with mental health issues, dysfunctional relationships between the schools and their communities, and the culture of distrust in learning institutions.
Therefore, implementing safe designs in schools may ease some tensions manifesting by balancing the need for the safety and independence of learners.
