Resource 2: Examples of statements for use in Activity 2

Write several arithmetic statements like these on the blackboard.

Note that some of the statements you use should be true and some not.

(3 + 5) + 8 = 3 + (5 + 8)

(3 + 5) × 8 = 3 + (5 × 8)

(3 – 5) – 8 = 3 – (5 – 8)

(3 × 5) + 8 = 3 × (5 + 8)

3 – (5 + 8) = (3 – 5) + 8

(8 – 5) × 3 = (3 – 5) × 8

(8 + 5) × 3 = 8 × 3 + 8 × 5

3 × 5 + 3 × 8 = (3 + 5) × 8

3 × 5 – 8 = 8 – 3 × 5

3 × (5 – 8) = 3 × 5 – 3 × 8

(5 – 3) × 8 = 8 × (3 – 5)

3 × (8 – 5) = 3 × 8 – 3 × 5
